Origin[]
Rufus was an African American servant and friend to Johnny Rebel. He helped the boy hero fight crimes and tried his best to keep him out of trouble. Like most African-American characters created during this period, he was prone to bouts of cowardliness and horrendously phonetic accents, but Johnny treated him with genuine respect, which is more than can be said for lots of his fellow Golden Age African-American characters.
