Origin[]
Captain Alfonso Payton, the Sky Pirate, is portrayed as a daring and sophisticated air plunderer. Described as a handsome and refined Spanish-American, he commands the airship "Chameleon." In June 1936 (the fictitious time period set in the book), Payton kidnaps Helen Grayman, the daughter of a New York billionaire, along with her maid, from her bedroom. Initially, Helen believes the abduction is a prank orchestrated by her friends. Payton introduces himself as Commodore Brown of the Washington Aero-Yacht Club to mislead her. He demands a $10 million ransom from her father, William Grayman, and takes the captives to his lodge in a remote Labrador wilderness. Throughout the narrative, Payton's cunning and audacity are central to the unfolding events.

- The illustration used for this article is a substitute, as no artwork of the character has been found, so a cover art by Duncan McMillan from an old pulp magazine in the public domain was used.
