Origin[]
Millionaire Richard Wentworth was also the ruthless vigilante The Spider. As the Spider, Wentworth was armed with an air pistol and wore fangs, a wig, and vampire make-up. He was assisted by his fiance, butler, chauffeur, and manservant. Like other pulp heroes such as Domino Lady or Black Bat, Spider had a calling card the "Spider Seal", a red-ink spider, which he would leave on the foreheads of his victims.
Public Domain Appearances[]
- The Spider #1-12
Notes[]
- Stan Lee named the character as a major influence on the creation of Spider-Man in the book Origins of Marvel Comics. Will Murray noted the similarity between the Spider's costume in the movie serials and the original Spider-Man costume, and the common element of both characters being perpetually sought by authorities unaware of their true identities.
