Spot is a lanky, idiotic dog with a spot on his side and a drooping tongue. He is owned by Lyman, the roommate of Jon Arbuckle, who owns Garfield, the cat which Spot is prone to annoying. Unlike Garfield, Spot does not think in English dialogue.

- The original Jon comics were published without a copyright notice.
- Spot was renamed to "Odie" when Jon was adapted into Garfield, and eventually transferred from Lyman's ownership to Jon's. The Odie version of Spot is copyrighted, and therefore you can only name him Spot in a commercial work, not Odie.
