"A son of ancient Pueblo chiefs," Chief Swift Elk is himself a Chief of the Pueblo tribe. He is well-known to a local sheriff "somewhere in the Arizona territory." The sheriff is surprised to encounter Swift Elk, indicating the hero may not be from the area.
