The article as currently written indicates Christopher Marlowe’s play as being the character’s first appearance, but the Faust character is older than that, originating in German folklore. The character’s name was changed from Faust to Faustus (or Fauſtus) for the earliest English‐language appearances, but thanks to Goethe’s play, the character is still better known in English as Faust, so the article’s name should probably be changed to “Faust.” See the Wikipedia article . ElyaqimNYC (talk) 22:46, December 31, 2015 (UTC)

Faust and Faustus aren't quite the same. As noted in the article, Johann Faust was a real person, and John Faustus is a character Marlowe created, inspired by him. It seems true though that Faust was already a stock character in fiction before Marlowe. Maybe we could have a page for the historical Faust, or maybe we could expand this one to cover both characters since they're so similar and one inspired by the other -- BlueFrackle (talk) 03:09, April 15, 2016 (UTC)
Whether the Faust character of legend is based on Johann Georg Faust is a matter of debate, but if he was, it is of course very loosely. However, both Gœthe’s Faust character and Marlowe’s (as well as many others) are basd on the legend and thus can be considered variations on the same character. It would be unreasonable to create a separate article for each writer’s or publisher’s version of the same character. —ElyaqimNYC (talk) 05:15, April 15, 2016 (UTC)
