Tate was a bounty hunter and mercenary who was injured during the Civil War, at the battle of Vicksburg. He lost the use of his left arm, which is now covered in leather and held by a sling. Although he had only one arm, he had a wicked fast draw. His wife, Mary, is dead and he was asked to leave his hometown by Marshal Morty Taw. He speaks some Commanche.
