Origin[]

The Norse god of thunder, Thor is the son of Odin and the giantess Jörd. His wife is Sif and he had a mistress, Járnsaxa the giantess. Thor had two sons, Magni and Modi, and he had a daughter named Thrud. He resides in his hall known as the Bilskirnir which is located in Asgard.

Powers and Abilities[]

He wields the short-handled hammer, Mjölnir, which can be thrown like a boomerang and has the power to throw lightning bolts. In order to lift his hammer, Thor wears the belt, Megingjord (which gives him super strength), and a pair of special iron gloves called Járngreipr. He drives a chariot pulled by the goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr.

Public Domain Comic Appearances[]

  • Top-Notch #1-3: Scott Rand pilots his "time Car, a vehicle designed by its inventor, Dr. Joel Meade. They observe a Viking invasion, in which the Vikings are losing badly. They rescue the last Viking survivor of the battle, a man by the name of Thor, and take them with him.
  • Weird Comics #1-5: Believing that the world needed a defender, Thor, son of Odin and supreme ruler of Valhalla, bestowed upon the human Grant Farrel his own powers, which Grant used to become a crime fighter.
  • Out of This World #11: Charlton's version of Thor was a normal Scandinavian man who was weak and cowardly compared to his Viking brothers. He discovers a cave that glowed with strange light. Bathing in these rays caused Thor to grow strong. He also discovered a hammer-shaped object in the cave which, when thrown, shot lightning and destroyed any obstacles.
  • Go-Go Comics #6: Thore the God Thenthathional was a parody of Marvel's version of Thor that was member of the Marvelous Heroes. He joined his fellow heroes in fighting their rivals the Bestest League of America.
  • Hit Comics #38, 51: When the Kid summons Thor on a case, and his hammer misses its target, the god was incensed. He later manages his own return, and, with Kid Eternity, together they solved the mystery: his bolt missed the target because of a hidden antenna. Kid Eternity later summons Thor again along with Geronimo, Robin Hood, and Apollo when Bill Watkins searched for a forgotten world in the Brazilian rain forest.
  • Wham Comics #1-2:Craig Carter discovers that an Egyptian named Aben Toumaj whose life he once saved has given him a magical ring that commands the (Greek) gods (although Thor is also mentioned).
  • Humdinger #3, 5: Mickey Starlight is told the story of of Thor and the Mountain Giant and How Thor Recovered His Hammer.
  • Frisky Fables v2 #8: A statue of Thor comes to life and takes penguin Icicle Ike to Valhalla. Ike and Thor decide to visit the hostile Ice Giants to stave off war. Thor is defeated in the feats of strength contest, but Ike saves the day and prevents war.
  • Blue Bolt v2 #6: The Twister battles a servant of the ancient god Thor, who, speaking for Thor, uses a hypnotic vibration device on the workers of an airplane plant, which brings them under hypnotic control. Their task is to destroy that airplane plant and others because they are a perceived threat to Thor.
  • Unusual Tales #18: In the Incredible Walking Stick, A man briefly owns a walking stick made from the hammer of Thor.
