Origin[]
Cosmo Topper is a mild-mannered and rather repressed banker living in a stifling, routine-filled life. Topper is middle-aged, somewhat timid, and feels trapped in a humdrum existence, dominated by his bossy wife, Marion. His life is devoid of excitement until he encounters the ghosts of George and Marion Kerby, a free-spirited couple who recently died in a car accident. The Kerbys introduce Topper to a world of mischief and adventure, shaking up his rigid sense of propriety and challenging his previously sedate nature.
Throughout the novel, Topper becomes a character torn between two worlds: his traditional, safe life and the lively, unconventional existence the Kerbys offer. His journey is a search for self-liberation as he grapples with moral dilemmas and learns to embrace his desires and impulses. Although initially reluctant to abandon his old ways, Topper gradually becomes more daring, allowing himself to laugh, break societal rules, and flirt with the supernatural possibilities of life.
