Hi, welcome to Public Domain Super Heroes! Thanks for your edit to the Talk:Santa Claus page.
Open Source Characters
Hi, Joe! The characters that require creator credit can't be in the Open Source Characters category because, since they require creator credit, they aren't really "open sourced" as there are requirements to use them. That's why the "Characters that require creator credit" subcategory was created.Cebr1979 (talk) 07:19, November 21, 2014 (UTC)
Yeah, I realized today after I found the Creative Commons category and planned on changing them to that section. Although, don't most of the characters in the Open Source category require author credit? JoeFrankenstein (talk) 01:57, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
Weird. I probably got my tabs confused. Do all the characters that require creator credit also belong in Creative Commons automatically or is that strictly for ones that were originally posted with a license from the creative commons website? JoeFrankenstein (talk) 06:32, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
Nah, the Creative Commons category is for ones that have a lot of restrictions/requirements (like Blacklist: a cool character that you can't use in anything you might make money off... What the???). Those Creative Commons characters need to be checked individually before using them 'cause everyone could be different (like Hatsune Miku where you're not supposed to do anything with her naked). Then there are characters like Pink Pineapple & Coconut that aren't really open sourced or released under creative commons, there just sorta "there" without falling under any category because, in order to use them, you have to ask first. Or Royal Blue which doesn't fall under creative commons but, can't be open sourced either because it requires creator credit. Unlike the others that require creator credit, though, it also requires a state and zip code! The more difficult people make their characters to use, the less likely they are to be used. A few of mine suck (to be perfectly honest) and I wish I'd put more thought into making some of them (like the Jimnast - still love the name and could have made him into something cool but, I honestly have no idea why I threw in that bit about shopping???) but, they're simple and anyone can do whatever they want with them without any restrictions or requirements at all so they get used (most of them anyways, some still haven't as far as I know). The best, in my opinion, are Marz Workman's (like my favourite open source character of all time: Sneakers, and others like Black Arachnid, and Yellow Wolf).Cebr1979 (talk) 08:04, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
I see now that I had the Homem-Grilo characters in the Open Source category even though they require creator credit. Good catch! I've corrected my mistake!Cebr1979 (talk) 08:22, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
I gotta admit I laughed out loud when I saw Bat-Shit Crazy, that's just a great character. Pink Pineapple is weird since the only other character the guy made doesn't require notifying him. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 08:41, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
- Just passing through and not a member here, but it should be said that this is a different definition of "Open Source" than the rest of the world uses. Attribution and copyleft are central to the GPL in software, for example. And if you need to ask permission, you don't have blanket permission, so it's not anything. I recommend the introduction to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source and http://opensource.org/ 220.127.116.11 20:17, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
That's one of the very pages I looked at when the whole open source vs. Creative Commons argument first started (and believe you me... It was an argument! Yikes!).
Can you direct me to a paragraph that discusses creator credit being necessary? It could exist, I'm not doubting you, I'm just not interested in going down that fight all over again. Once upon a time, I would've searched. Today, meh. Either quote it or... Whatevs. I'm not re-doing a codeandreload/freeuniverse barf. Cebr1979 (not sure why the tildes don't show up when I'm on my iPad)
- I'd start at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_software_license#Attribution.2C_disclaimers_and_notices, which says some with GPLv2 as an example. Simpler examples considered more permissive than GPL are https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BSD_licenses#2-clause_license_.28.22Simplified_BSD_License.22_or_.22FreeBSD_License.22.29 18.104.22.168 21:32, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
- So that really doesn't say anything that isn't already here and just goes to prove that this wikia does handle "open source characters" just like the "rest of the world."Cebr1979 (talk) 13:16, November 25, 2014 (UTC)
the more I read the more I'm thinking that the Open Source category should probably be replaced. There should probably be seperate sections for each time of creative commons license (attributions, derivatives, commercial, share alike) because any character that requires creator credit is under a creative commons attribution 4.0 license. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 20:52, November 22, 2014 (UTC)
We discussed that long ago and it would just be too many categories that people would have to click on separately one at a time. As it is right now, if someone is interested in a character, they need to simply go to that character's page and all of the info needed is right there in the notes section. No clicking! Not having separate categories for all the different licences was even written into this wikia's rules/FAQ by an admin.Cebr1979 (talk) 13:16, November 25, 2014 (UTC)
Public Domain Category?
Would it be possible for you to add photos to the wikia when you've posted the bio for these characters? At present time, you've added a whole lot of photos that are just sitting there not attached to any bio page. They're just in limbo on here seemingly for no reason?Cebr1979 (talk) 01:23, November 26, 2014 (UTC)
No problem, I get a little carried away. I won't upload anything else until I've caught up on making the bio pages. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 02:24, November 26, 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I know we all get excited (and I am interested in seeing your next characters, the ones you've completed thus far have been interesting... the Cyclocks being my fav).Cebr1979 (talk) 02:28, November 26, 2014 (UTC)
Robito with one T
Oh,i wasn't going by the International Superheroes page I was going by the comic itself. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 23:56, December 7, 2014 (UTC)
It's all good, I found an image that has two Ts. Let me see if there are any with only one or not. No point in changing it back to change it again. I'd like to be sure.Cebr1979 (talk) 00:23, December 8, 2014 (UTC)
Let's ask Hyju. He discovered these characters originally and is from Brazil so I'm sure he would know! He can (as far as I know) read Portuguese without using Google Translate so he would know if there's more to it. I'm not necessarily doubting that image, I'm just wondering if there's some sort of inside joke/parody to the misspellings (most of the characters parody something lol).
Sorry for assuming you were going off that IntlSH website, I just knew they spelt it differently and also had the "Target Boy" reference on it. Next time, I'll ask first rather than jumping to conclusions (except I probably won't 'cause I'm usually hot-headed but, I'll at least try to not assume... best I can do haha). Cebr1979 (talk) 00:39, December 8, 2014 (UTC)
it's all good. I've been interested in the characters so I've been slowly reading the comics with google translate. There's a few more characters from the series I'd like to make pages for as well. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 01:01, December 8, 2014 (UTC)
That would be awesome! I know there's a bumble bee/wasp type of girl who I'm pretty sure is a villain but, I can't even seem to find out her name so have just sorta left her hanging but, if you can find anything about her or any others, by all means! I'd love to see them! P.S. If you happen to find first appearances for any of them, that would be awesome too! I hate that they all say "Unknown!" It's a pet peeve of mine but, I don't know what they are so.... whatareyougonnado?Cebr1979 (talk) 01:06, December 8, 2014 (UTC)
P.S. It's been a couple since I messaged Hyju and no response yet, so I'm gonna switch Robitto back to your two Ts. If/when he gets back to us, if he reveals that it should only be 1, it can get changed again then.Cebr1979 (talk) 03:28, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
Just me nitpicking about photos
Hi again! If you go to the Esmaga-Grilo page you just created (thanks for that, btw!) and go to the "read more" section below, you'll see Garota Cri Cri, Dr. Louva-a-Deus, and Musculoso but, the doctor has no photo. That happens when the image added is too small. I usually go to paint and make them a bit bigger before adding them. Not the hugest thing in the world but, I just thought I'd mention it so you didn't think I was just deleting your photos and then re-adding them for no reason. Cheers!Cebr1979 (talk) 02:42, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
It usually takes about a day for a bigger photo to start showing up. It wasn't always like that, photo size didn't matter before, then... suddenly... something changed about a year ago or so (give or take). I try and fix any I come across whenever I notice but, I'm sure there are still lots more. I just fixed Wilton of the West on Sunday.Cebr1979 (talk) 02:58, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
okay, i see it now. thats no problem. Is there a specific size they need to be? JoeFrankenstein (talk) 03:05, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
I just usually make them about as big as I made the doctor's and the robot's photos just now. I'm sure there is a science behind how big it exactly needs to be but, I just eyeball it and go from there. So long as it works, good enough, I think! hahaCebr1979 (talk) 03:15, December 10, 2014 (UTC)
anyone have thoughts about 'superhero' type characters introduced in political cartoons? i've come across a few that would be deemed controversial but considering the amount of nazi characters i'm sure there's room for them. one two three four thoughts? JoeFrankenstein (talk) 07:26, December 21, 2014 (UTC)
the artist is a big supporter of the copyleft movement and has uploaded most of his work to archive.org JoeFrankenstein (talk) 01:46, December 22, 2014 (UTC)
Sounds like a cool guy! :-) I'd suggest adding something to the notes section of the bios stating that they're satirical and by an American rather than being by someone who actually wants to kill the President and such.Cebr1979 (talk) 01:51, December 22, 2014 (UTC)
yeah, i'll get around to them eventually. i've got a whole long list of characters i've been meaning to add along with some more open source ones. i just gotta stop procrastinating about it. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 05:56, January 13, 2015 (UTC)
Christmas and such
Not sure how much I'll be on over the next couple weeks as I'll be busy with family and stuff but, just wanted to say a quick happy holidays to you and yours! Thanks for all your help lately on the wikia! Cheers! Cebr1979 (talk) 01:09, December 23, 2014 (UTC)
So I was looking up more characters to add that I hadn't seen on here like the Yellow Kid and Buster Brown when I discovered the Public Domain Funnies Wiki. I'm sure I'd checked it out before but it totally slipped my mind so I checked it out a bit. It seems to be kind of abandoned. There are only about 40 pages on it and there hasn't been an update in a long time. I've also noticed that there are probably a couple hundred characters on here that could moved over there. So how should this be handled? JoeFrankenstein (talk) 07:17, December 30, 2014 (UTC)
Hi! As you know, our admins are all AWOL. Now... as you also know... I seem to be the head honcho (at least I act like it anyways...) BUT: (Regardless of being here the longest...) I have no right to that title so... was thinking... what if we created a "council" (or whatever, for lack of a better term): A group of us who operated as an admin (even though we still wouldn't have the powers of one but, at least we could start to work together instead of the way it is)? We could talk and hold votes and etc, etc... What are your thoughts on that? To keep everyone conversing together, please respond here.Cebr1979 (talk) 16:39, March 8, 2016 (UTC)
I checked on ComicBookPlus and they have his first appearance in Special War Series #4 and it appears to have the same copyright mistake as the other Charlton heroes. So I guess if we are keeping the others, Judomaster is good too. JoeFrankenstein (talk) 01:04, July 22, 2016 (UTC)
- You're always good at remembering this stuff, if you wouldn't mind chiming in. Thanks in advance.Cebr1979 (talk) 22:28, September 9, 2016 (UTC)
Hello! I'm the new bureaucrat at the O/S wiki and am looking for a team of 4 people (not including myself) to be admins and help determine what new O/S characters follow the proper guidelines to become new profiles here at the PDSH.
